Free Iron Man crochet tutorial
Try your hand at making this mini Iron Man, with a switch up to making mixed coloured bobble stitches. This is a step-up from my previous free Hulk pattern. We all have to start from somewhere and I’m not proud to say my oldest iron man was very ugly. It got a little better… at the end, I’ll even show you my latest Hulkbuster!
Terminology
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet (2sc1 means 2 single crochet in same ch)
Sl st = slip stitch
St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)
Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease
Bobble stitch = 4 double crochet bobble
Materials and Tools
2.0mm Clover crochet hook
Orion Top Deluxe Yarn, Crown Yarn (or any equivalent acrylic yarn) - red, yellow, white
Darning needle
Stitch markers
Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill
Scissors
Glass eyes
White nail polish
Head
Round 1: Magic ring 10 (red) – 10st
Round 2: 2sc10 (red) – 20st
Round 3: Sc6 (red), sc2 (yellow), sc2 (red), sc2 (yellow), sc8 (red) – 20st
Round 4: (Sc1, 2sc1) x 3 (red), (sc1, 2sc1) x 1 (yellow), (sc1, 2sc1) x 1 (red), (sc1, 2sc1) x 1 (yellow), (sc1, 2sc1) x 4 (red) – 30st
Round 5: Sc9 (red), sc10 (yellow), sc11 (red) – 30st
Round 6: (Sc1, sc2tog1) x 3 (red), (sc1, sc2tog1) x 3 (yellow), sc1 (yellow), sc2tog1 (red), (sc1, sc2tog1) x 3 (red) – 20st
Round 7: Sc6 (red), sc7 (yellow), sc7 (red) – 20st
Round 8: Sc2tog3 (red), sc2tog4 (yellow), sc2tog3 (red) – 10st
Round 9: Sc2tog1 (red), sc2tog3 (yellow), sc2tog1 (red) – 5st
Body (continue from head)
Round 10: 2sc5 (red) – 10st
Round 11: 2sc10 (red) – 20st
Round 12: Sc8 (red), 9th arm, sc6 (red), 16th arm, sc4 (red) – 20st
Arms (at 9th and 16th position): 4dc bobble stitch, top half yellow, bottom half red
(Bobble stitch for arms = top half yellow, bottom half red
From the 8th single crochet in Round 12, you will have 1 red loop on hook
Yarn over yellow, insert hook, yarn over yellow again, draw yellow yarn through –> you will have 2 yellow loops and 1 red loop on hook. Then draw red yarn through 2 yellow loops on hook –> you will have 2 red loops on hook
Repeat process: yo yellow, insert hook, yo yellow and draw yellow yarn through –> you will have 2 yellow loops and 2 red loops on hook. Then draw red yarn through 2 yellow loops on hook –> you will have 3 red loops on hook
Repeat again: yo yellow, insert hook, yo yellow and draw yellow yarn through –> you will have 2 yellow loops and 3 red loops on hook. Then draw red yarn through 2 yellow loops on hook –> you will have 4 red loops on hook
Repeat last time: yo yellow, insert hook, yo yellow and draw yellow yarn through –> you will have 2 yellow loops and 4 red loops on hook. Then draw red yarn through 2 yellow loops on hook –> you will have 5 red loops on hook
Then pull through red yarn through all 5 red loops on hook and sc1 in next main stitch.)
Body – continued
Round 13: Sc20 (red) – 20st
Round 14: Repeat round 13 – 20st
Round 15: Sc10 (red), 11th leg, sc5 (red), 17th leg, sc3 (red) – 20st
Legs (at 11th and 17th position): 4dc bobble stitch, top half yellow, bottom half red
(Follow same method as above for the bobble stitch for arms)
Round 16: Magic ring 10 then 2sc10, to join up to round 15 (all red) – 20st
Core – white
Magic ring 5
Assembly
1. Use white nail polish to colour the glass eyes white, alternatively can get hold of white pins to use as eyes.
2. Insert 2 glass eyes at 5th row of the whole head. It should be just 1 row below the lowest red/yellow junction of head.
3. Place core over the chest of body, just in between the 2 bobble arms in the midline.
